Victory Villas, Inc. was founded in 1974 by Gloria Vaden, a newspaper editor, community activist and the parent of a son with a developmental disability. Ms. Vaden purchased a single-family home in the community for her son and others like him to live and receive training in the skills necessary to live a more independent life. She felt that his living and training scenario was far superior to the choice being offered by the State at the time, institutions. In the beginning, family members would come by the home daily to provide the support, training and guidance to the guys who resided there. In 1977, Victory Villas, Inc. received recognition and funding from the State.
In 1984, a new apartment complex which could house up to 24 individuals was constructed in Dania Beach with funding from the Development of Housing and Urban Development. Over the years, Victory Villas changed and grew as dictated by the needs of the community and the population served. Victory Villas eventually became Victory Living Programs and the range and scope of services expanded and changed. Current services include: supported independent living, supported employment, vocational evaluations and assessments, adult day training/community inclusion and a wide variety of social and recreational activities.
Future Needs/You Can Help:
The need for quality services for individuals with developmental disabilities grows on a daily basis. Unfortunately, the funding for the services is not growing at the same rate as the need, at times the funding actually decreases. Victory Living Programs, Inc. must continue to seek alternate ways of funding, to assure that individuals with developmental disabilities will continue to have the opportunities to develop their independence and become contributing members of their communities.
